For the Love of Kirsten Dunst

Okay, this has nothing to do with vintage or DIY, but I do need to get it off my chest.

I have never wanted to hate an actress as much as I’ve wanted to hate Kirsten Dunst.

I don’t know what it is about her that makes me try to reject every fiber of her being, but the truth is (and I’ve finally admitted it to myself with the spectacular-ness that is Melancholia) that I bow down to her greatness.  In fact, I’m going to shout it off the rooftops:

From her roles in Sofia Coppola’s masterpieces The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette, to the previously ordained Melancholia and the newest (and extraordinarily hilarious and offbeat) Bachelorette, I have to say she blows me away.  Her acting is just wholly unsurpassed in young Hollywood right now.  Not to mention she has that certain charm about her, doesn’t she?

So what say we take a look at my one of my favorite modern actresses in her quirky and stylized star roles.

The Virgin Suicides (directed by Sofia Coppola) – 1999

Elizabethtown (directed by Cameron Crowe) – 2005

Marie Antoinette (directed by Sofia Coppola) – 2006

Melancholia (directed by Lars von Trier) – 2011

Bachelorette (directed by Leslye Headland) – 2012

Love her or hate her, don’t you think she just picks the best roles?  Except for the Spiderman trilogy, of course.  ::shudder::

And if you haven’t seen Melancholia yet, you must.  She won Best Actress at Sundance for her role as a clinically depressed woman on the eve of her wedding and earth’s collision with a rogue planet.  In the words of genius director Lars von Trier, “Melancholia is a beautiful film about the end of the world.”

  1. I thought I was alone it wanting to hate her! I always just want to not like her at all, & then even when I don’t like the film she’s in I still like her in it…weird.

    • hahaha, I wonder what it is?! Maybe we should do a thesis paper or research article on it. It’s like that weird, innate hatred that people have for Nickelback…which I’m pretty sure psychologists actually officially labeled, haha.

  2. I’ve always like her because she’s my closest ‘celebrity lookalike’… but yeah the Spiderman films were a bit of a damper on my opinion of her. I bet she made a ton of money off of them though, so good on her!

    • Oh my gosh, you do look alike! How lovely! Right? I truly dislike the Spiderman movies (and I LOVE superhero movies), but you’re right…sometimes you gotta go where the money is, I guess. Plus her outfits were adorable in the trilogy so that counts for something as well :)

  3. Cheers for the pingback on using our image (@thncom). Just wanted to say, I think she’s awesome but my review of Elizabethtown may have lent my thoughts on that.

You should have also had her little co-starring role in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind though…

    • For sure, and thanks so much for providing such a lovely image! Brilliant suggestion; I really searched for an Eternal Sunshine photo of her that was a showstopper, but couldn’t find any that really popped so I left it out…though, you’re right, it really needs to be included. Thanks so much for your input and your excellent review of Elizabethtown (love that film as well)!

  4. I love her and everyone says I look like her too!

  5. melancholia traumatised me!! I am still not over it!! love this blog though!!

    • Yes, it certainly has an effect! It’s excruciating, even. But I guess I like being traumatized, though, so that’s why I love it so :) Thanks for reading and your kind words!
